Travel Insurance with Existing Medical Conditions

American Express provides cover for many pre-existing medical conditions, subject to medical screening. Medical screening can be completed online as part of the quote process, or by calling us directly on
0800 028 7573 to speak to one of our insurance specialists.

What is a pre-existing medical condition?

A pre-existing medical condition is defined as:

  • Any past or current medical condition that has given rise to symptoms or for which any form of treatment or prescribed medication, medical consultation, investigation or follow-up/check-up has been required or received during the 2 years prior to the commencement of cover under this Policy and/or prior to any trip.
  • any cardiovascular or circulatory condition (e.g. heart condition, hypertension, blood clots, raised cholesterol, stroke, aneurysm) that has occurred at any time prior to the commencement.

Online Medical Screening

You will be prompted at step 4 of the quote process, (‘Declaration’ to answer a series of questions that will determine if a medical screening is necessary). If you answer yes to one or more of the questions, you will be taken through a simple medical screening process. We will then determine if we can provide cover. You may be subject to an additional premium to cover a pre-existing medical condition. If we are unable to provide cover for your medical condition, we will still cover you for events that are not related to your medical condition. If you have further questions, or wish to speak to an insurance specialist, please call us directly on 0800 028 7573. If you have already completed an online quote, please reference your quote number to help us find your details quicker.

For further information on specific medical conditions, please see the pages below:

  • Cancer

Many people living with cancer, or receiving treatment for cancer, can find it difficult to get travel insurance. However, at American Express we understand everyone enjoys travelling abroad, whatever their medical condition. That’s why we consider travel insurance for pre existing medical conditions to anyone with active, metastatic or relapsed cancer, including people having treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This includes breast cancer and prostate cancer. For those people with lung cancer or other types of cancer, or who’ve had this in the past, our online quote system will ask you a series of questions to work out whether we’re able to provide you with complete cover.

  • Heart, circulation and breathing conditions

Cardiovascular conditions are incredibly common and can make it difficult to get travel insurance. Our online screening system helps us work out whether we can provide you with cover, which may require an additional premium, to make sure your travels around the world will be safe and secure. If you suffer from hypertension, an irregular heartbeat, use a pacemaker, have had a cerebrovascular accident or are living with any heart condition, you could still be covered with American Express travel insurance with medical conditions.

We can also provide cover for people living with asthma or other types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). If you have a history or respiratory conditions, you still may be eligible for medical travel insurance from American Express.

  • Chronic and ongoing conditions

Many of us live with difficult health conditions every day, but that shouldn’t prevent us travelling the world or being able to do so safely and with peace of mind. Our travel insurance for pre existing medical conditions can cover a number of chronic and ongoing medical conditions, including epilepsy, diabetes, physical disabilities, childhood developmental conditions and back problems. During our online medical screening, we’ll ask you more information about your condition to understand whether we’re able to provide you with cover, which may be subject to an additional premium.
